2 flights and 12 hours later
2 flights and 12 hours later I am back home in beautiful Brisbane, Queensland, Australia to start the QUT bluebox accelerator program for the startup I founded, the International Alumni Job Network.
Strangely being back in my hometown has made me homesick for Vietnam which has been my home for the last 10 years and where my wife and 2 boys will stay for the 3.5 months of the program.
First impressions of being back is the overwhelming integration of technology in the city and the impressive developments in office, retail and residential buildings around the inner city. Far from the big country town I left in 2003 the city now looks, feels and operates as an international city.
Sleeping in the park
Straight through the electronic customs in a jiffy and picked up by my best friend Pat we were breakfasting downtown in no time and as we enjoyed homemade jams, bagels and eggs we watched as the local police responded to a late night reveler that was sleeping in the park across the road.
The kind and professional way the policemen approached the young women still in her heels from the night before made me incredibly proud of Australia and the culture of caring and openness that makes the country so great. By the time we had finished our cappuccinos the young women was on her way home safe and sound, with only a slight mixture of pinkish sunburn and red embarrassment on her face.
The Sunday afternoon was spent cleaning my new room in my friend Susan's apartment in West End and finalizing meetings for the next week. I went to sleep excited with the anticipation of what I can accomplish in the next few months in this beautiful river city I used to call home.
Brisbane and QUT
The QUT bluebox accelerator program is located in Brisbane. Brisbane is a fast growing, highly liveable city of 1.7 million with an unbeatable climate and easy access to the beaches at Gold and Sunshine Coasts as well as the rainforest parks in the hinterland.
